Sample Itinerary: A Day at Hoover Dam

Date: September 4, 2017

There’s more to Nevada than casinos and showgirls. Just 40 minutes southeast of Sin City you’ll find one of America’s major landmarks: Hoover Dam. Built in the early 1930s, the massive dam was intended to control flooding of the Colorado River and provide power to the growing population in the Southwest. Today, the dam generates enough power to serve 1.3 million people.

One of the best ways to see this iconic structure, and the neighboring Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge is via the Black Canyon Raft Tour offered by Black Canyon River Adventures. The three-hour tour takes guests from the foot of the bridge down the Colorado to Willow Beach, a popular spot for camping and fishing.

Here’s an idea of what a day away from the city lights, exploring the Utah-Arizona border, could look like.

After a full day of adventure along the 12-mile Black Canyon Water Trail, return to Las Vegas for a night on the town. Alternatively, you can head back to your camping spot at Lake Mead for a cookout. Whether you’re just taking a day away from the craziness of Sin City or spending a week touring from The Grand Canyon to the Valley of Fire, the Hoover Dam is worth a day trip.
